Harnessing the power of social media to improve democracy 🗣️🗳️

Joseph

The e-lectorate platform is a social media application specifically designed for free speech, deliberation, online voting and holding elected leaders to account.

We looked at social media platforms like X/Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and more and noticed that democracy is happening on these platforms!

Think about all of the times an MP or political influencer posts, think about all of the reactions and comments to that post - is that not democracy? 🤔

Everything you ‘like’, is that not an expression of your wishes? Is that not a vote? ❤️ = 🗳️

Current social media platforms are disorderly. Anyone can post about anything. Our aim is to give these democratic interactions a home dedicated for Britain 🇬🇧

A safe space where you can engage in democracy and democracy can engage with you.

So, why do we do this?

We are concerned with the amount of people who are disenfranchised from participating in democracy.

Think about single-parent families. Between work and family commitments how can they join a political party, attend a protest or lobby their MP? 👩‍👦‍👦

The reality for lots of people is that they cannot make their voice heard and elected leaders need to cut the noise and see what matters to the people they represent.

The e-lectorate platform is here for you.

People may not have time to attend democratic events, but, do they have time to go on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter?

Giving people easier access to democracy surely benefits democracy overall.

Allowing people to closely follow all MPs, Lords and Public institutions and breaking down the barrier to allow them to voice their opinion on issues that matter to them improves democracy.

We want a level playing field!

Participation in democracy should not be reserved for the select-few who can spend time and resources lobbying politicians.

Is social media the answer? 🤔

We are research project trying to prove that democracy can become better with a dedicated social media platform. If this resonates with you and you want to help prove our research then create an account and get involved!
